PNNL’s scanner technology goes commercial

WASHINGTON — if the latest experiment is successful, that Doug McMakin will save travelers time and hassle at the airport one day soon.

They are not going to take off their shoes when they go through security, because the scanner will examine their feet and immediately detect whether they are a security risk.

Thanks to McMakin’s engineering works at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, the same technology is used in many malls across the country, where shoppers can step up to machine clothes and have them instantly fit in with the measurement of different sizes and brands.

Such a question asked in foreign countries about the security of full-body scanners, engineers are touting the PNNL machine they claim to be safer and can ease the Airport line and the potential suicide bombers.

They also seek to improve technology scanners to see not only security, but in other applications, such as exposing more everyday pests are hidden behind the wall, too.
